MSU Champions Holistic Wellness in Commemorative World Mental Health Day Events

GWERU, ZIMBABWE – Midlands State University (MSU) led a university-wide observance of World Mental Health Day on Friday, 10 October 2025, with a powerful focus on this year’s critical theme: “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”

In a significant display of institutional commitment, the event—organised by the Counselling and Health Services departments under the Student Affairs Division—also integrated breast cancer awareness, underscoring a holistic approach to student and staff wellness.

The commemorations, held simultaneously at the University’s Gweru, Harare, and Zvishavane campuses, began with a unifying solidarity march.

The main proceedings at the MSU Grand Chapel were opened by Mrs. L. Mashavidze, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Acting Executive Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. K. Mafa.

Setting the tone for the day, Mrs. Mashavidze articulated the University’s core philosophy on mental wellness, stating, “This commemoration affirms the University’s deep commitment to placing student mental health at the centre of our crisis preparedness.”

The keynote address was delivered by the Gweru District Medical Officer, Dr. S. Mureyani, who provided an expert perspective on the necessity of accessible mental health support during times of crisis.

Dr. Mureyani framed the issue in unequivocal terms, declaring, “We must always remember that good mental health is a universal human right because, fundamentally, there is no health without mental health.”

Echoing this sentiment from a law enforcement perspective, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Chief Superintendent, Dr. Marongedza emphasised the intrinsic link between psychological welfare and public order.

He offered a clear summation of the police’s stance, noting, “For the ZRP, the path to stability is clear: there is no community safety without community mental health.”

Following the formal addresses, the day transitioned into a comprehensive health expo, hosted by the MSU Health Services Department.

The event became a dynamic hub of activity, featuring a coalition of health organisations providing essential information and services to the MSU community.

Participating bodies included the MSU Clinic, Population Services Zimbabwe, the National AIDS Council, the MSU Red Cross Club, the Zimbabwe Diabetics Association, the MSU Disability Resource Centre, First Mutual Health, and the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council, among others.

Uniting these vital services under one banner, the event powerfully demonstrated MSU’s proactive and integrated strategy towards fostering a resilient, informed, and healthy university community.
